Palm trimming

Needs Greg's OK (G7):

How do you trim palms? Will you do a hurricane cut?

We remove only fronds that are fully brown, plus seed pods and coconuts. We don't use climbing spikes on live palms.

The University of Florida (UF/IFAS) says a hurricane cut leaves a palm less able to stand up to hurricane winds.

Picture the palm's head as a clock face. UF/IFAS treats the line from 9 to 3 o'clock as an absolute limit, not a target.

Royal, foxtail and Christmas palms shed their own fronds.

Before hurricane season

When should I trim before hurricane season?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Spring is the time to trim.

UF/IFAS ranks live oak and sand live oak highest for wind resistance. Laurel oak, water oak and sand pine rank lowest. Slash and longleaf pine rank medium-low.

Topping a tree or making large cuts raises the risk that it fails.

After a storm, keep an eye on pines. They can die 6 months to 2 years later.

Laurel oak lives about 50 to 70 years and hollows with age.

Trees near power lines

Can you trim the tree touching my power line?

Lines between poles belong to the utility, so call yours first. Your electric bill shows which utility serves you.

Under OSHA rules, only qualified line-clearance trimmers may work within 10 feet of energized lines.

Tampa Electric customers: Tampa Electric says "Property owners are responsible for maintaining their trees" near the line from the pole to the house. Tampa Electric can temporarily shut off or disconnect that line. Call 813-635-1500 two weeks before the planned trimming.

Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA) customers: KUA's contract crews prune only along KUA's lines and rights of way. For trees that aren't a utility matter, hire a private company. Report arcing or sparking wires to 407-933-9898.

Duke Energy, Lakeland Electric and other utilities: see each utility's own page in the list below.

Needs Greg's OK (G8, G1, K10):

After the line is made safe, text us and we'll plan around it.

If not confirmed, launch leaves this out.

Your electric bill shows which utility serves you. We haven't checked which utility serves which town. A 2022 Florida Public Service Commission report lists seven utilities in Polk County. Duke Energy Florida, Tampa Electric and Lakeland Electric are linked below. The report also lists City of Bartow, City of Fort Meade, Peace River Electric Cooperative and Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative. For those, call the number on your bill. For Kissimmee, see Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA) below.

Trimming questions

Needs Greg's OK (G11, G12):

Are you licensed or certified arborists?

Florida has no state license for tree work, and local tree-trimmer licenses ended in July 2025. We're an experienced tree crew, not ISA Certified Arborists.

If you need a formal risk assessment, for example to skip a city permit, hire an ISA Certified Arborist. ISA explains how to find one in its Find an Arborist FAQ.

General information, not legal advice. Check with your city or county before you cut.

What does tree or palm trimming cost?

It depends on how many trees or palms you have, how tall they are and how much comes off. Access, a lift and hauling the branches away matter too.

We don't post prices, because no two jobs are the same. Greg gives you a price for your job, or comes to look first.

They did an excellent job trimming my large live oak and removing some heavy, overextended branches while keeping the tree looking natural and balanced.
